I was an unemployed graduate for about three years after school. After job hunting for a long time, I got a job offer in Accra. (I live in Sunyani) Years ago I would have given the excuse that it’s too much of a distance and I wouldn’t be going, but this time I was so excited about it. A friend was the one who helped. When I came to Accra, I had no place to stay so I came to perch this friend in her single room self contain. Even with that, her place was far from my work so I started looking for a room to rent around the place to cut transportation cost. I got a place, but the cost for two years advance was too much and it wasn’t negotiable. But then someone placed an ad on facebook that she was looking for a roommate around the same area and that she wanted to split cost. It was in a facebook group.
I messaged the person and we met. I told her I had gotten a nice place but I have just started working so I don’t have enough on me so we can split and share everything. A week later, she sent her half and I added mine and met the landlord to finalize everything, then we moved in. I noticed she wasn’t even having much. All she brought was one medium size ecolac bag and I was even surprised. She told me she was a hustler and she moves a lot, that’s why. After just a few days I was already getting irritated by her. She didn’t have basic toiletories and she was always using my soap, toothpaste, and other things. When they finish, she wouldn’t buy them. When I tell her, she will apologize but she didn’t change at all.
I usually leave for work before she goes and I started realizing that anytime I returned from work, she was already home. But I didn’t really think much into it. One time there was a senior staff meeting at work and so all junior staff were closed early. When I got home, I tried unlocking the door with my key but the door wouldn’t open. That’s when I realized that there was a key behind the door. Which meant she was home. So I started knocking and she answered. But I could hear that she was with someone in the room. When she opened the door, there was a guy in the room and she introduced me to him as her boyfriend. I didn’t like the whole thing. We live in a single room. We share my bed. I know they were having sex that’s why they took so long to open the door. When the guy left, I spoke to her that it is better she visits her boyfriend rather and she said she has heard me. I asked about work and she told me she has been sacked so she is looking for another job.
Last week Friday, I returned home to see an empty apartment. Everything was gone. The door was left ajar. I was in shock when our other tenant who had returned from work told me he had seen my roommate and her boyfriend packing out. He asked them and they said our one year is up and we have found a better place. My roommate told the tenant that I will meet them at the new place from work and I had instructed them to pack out when I leave for work. This is all a lie. We have been there for barely five months. The other tenant didn’t know became he came just last month to meet us and he thought we have been there for long. I had saved some money to use it to do shopping. The previous saturday, my friend escorted me (the one I came to perch when I came to Accra) to go and buy things. Table top fridge, cooking utensils, microwave, wallpapers and many other things. We were so tired from the shopping that we packed the things in one corner and decided to unpack them the following saturday since that was when we are both free. She has taken all of it away. The mattress we lie on was also new. It was the first thing I bought before moving in. She has even taken away the shower curtains and left only my sponge and towel for me. All my shoes and slippers, bucket, jewelry, name it. Everything. She had emptied the room.
I did her no wrong. I am just a good person trying to live my life and cut some cost. Anytime I tried to use my savings to buy things, something told me to not do it. I guess my intuition had been right all the time. But I needed utensils to cook and all that. I needed a fridge. How can I even trust anyone after this. I have reported the whole issue to the police and they are searching for her. I have been calling her constantly but the number has been off as expected. I don’t know any friend or relative of hers. Human beings are wicked. I hope her deeds catch up with her!
